In the Spring of 2020, just days after being plunged into an unprecedented global lockdown, Maths teacher and avid reader Nick Waldron was suddenly provided with an abundance of time to do what he loves most - read books. Yet as he was about to gleefully embark upon his hitherto neglected list of must-reads, he had a sobering thought:
What if everyone doesn't have the same access to books that I do?
Indeed, having been born and raised in Burnley - a town often listed as one of the most deprived in England - Nick knew all too well about the importance of literacy in changing lives; however, it is this period of reflection that gave him the impetus to take action, and make a positive change in the community.
After many late nights and a few books later, the result was The Untidy Bookshelf, an independent bookshop centred around the love of reading itself. As well as offering hundreds of popular titles new and old, the site also acts as a platform for Nick's work in the local community. So far, the #books4schools initiative has raised over £1000 for underprivileged schools in the Burnley area, and it is hoped that the project will continue to flourish in the coming months.
Most of all, The Untidy Bookshelf is a hobby, an independent platform made by a book lover, looking to inspire positive change and share the joy of reading - and long may that continue.
“You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.”
